“Make your ways known to me, Lord; teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; I wait for you all day long.” Psalm 25:4-5
SET
During a rain delay, all you do is sit around and wait until the rain finally lets up, and you can resume play. As a closer, you wait the whole game until it is your turn to go in for the last few outs. As a kicker, you stand on the sidelines and wait for your team to get into position so you can go out on the field and put a few points on the board.
Our lives are full of waiting. Often, we wait patiently, knowing the outcome is worth it. Other times, we are anxious and take matters into our own hands instead of waiting. Which one of these sounds like your relationship with God?
It’s often hard to wait on God because we do not know the outcome. God’s plans are far above our own, so we usually cannot comprehend His direction. That’s where our faith and trust in God must lead us. In times of uncertainty, we are called to have bold faith in our God. Trusting that as we wait for His direction, we can do so confidently and joyfully. Fear and anxiety have no place when it comes to God’s plan for us.
I pray as we wait to hear and see what God has in store, we do so with joy, knowing we are stepping into His fantastic plan for our life!
GO
1. Does the idea of waiting cause you excitement or fear?
2. What does it look like to wait well?

“Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Psalm 34:8
SET
Ask an athlete or former athlete why they said yes to playing their sport. The responses will range from “Because I loved it,” “There was nothing else like it,” or “It was so good.” However, there will never be a response of “because it was safe.” Athletes do not play sports because they are safe. Athletes are not even promised safety! Athletes play sports because they love the game, and the game is good.
In a beloved book called Chronicles of Narnia, there is a moment when a child named Susan finds out Aslan is the great Lion. This book is a metaphor where God is depicted as Aslan the Lion. After discovering this truth, Susan asks Mr. Beaver, “Is he safe?” Mr. Beaver replies, “Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he is good.”
As Christians, this is a hard concept to grasp. Following God isn’t safe, but God is good. When we read the Bible, we are never promised safety. The Bible speaks of how God is always with us, has great plans for us, and forgives and loves us; however, no verse says, “You are promised a safe life.”
So why should we follow a God who isn’t safe? Why should we give our lives to Him, pray to Him, and obey Him? It is the same in our sports. If sports aren’t safe, why should we commit ourselves to practice, give our all to the game, or devote our trust and effort to our team? The answer is the same for God: because we love it, and it is good.
God and sports have this in common: not safe, but good. We follow God and play our sport, not because we are promised safety, but because we love both and both are good.
GO
1. Why are we not guaranteed safety in sports?
2. How does knowing God isn’t safe but good change your love for Him?
3. How does knowing God’s unchanging goodness help you even when everything changes?

"God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble. Therefore we will not be afraid, though the earth trembles and the mountains topple into the depths of the seas, though its water roars and foams and the mountains quake with its turmoil.”- Psalm 46:1-2
Set
Those of us who live with fear in the forefront of our brain tend to see danger at every turn. Our lives are filled with “what if” situations that paralyze us from action. We tend not to dream too big but instead wait for the other shoe to drop. When things are going good in our lives, we can only see the impending doom ahead because “it’s too good to be true” is our life motto.
In some ways, these people are correct; there will be times of trouble in your life. You might not make the varsity squad after practicing all summer. An injury might derail your career, and your scholarship might vanish. We will lose people we love and be tested far beyond our strength. We need to remember that through all these troubles and the ones yet to come, God is ALWAYS our refuge and strength. He is always there to help us in times of need. I love how Psalm 46 begins with who God is, telling us that no matter our fears and anxieties, God is always first so no matter what is going on around us we don’t need to be afraid.
Have Christ at the forefront of your mind, then the fears won’t be as consuming. Focus on God and seek Him in everything you do, and you will experience the protection of the helper when the times of trouble come. It is easy to focus on the anxieties and fears surrounding you. What is challenging is not letting them control your thoughts and instead look upon God.
Go
1. What troubles are causing you to be afraid?
2. What does it look like to focus on Christ first?
3. How does God help you in times of trouble?

We all need a mindset that renews our outlook on athletics. When we have a renewed outlook on how we play, coach, interact and compete, we realize that we compete for something more than wins; life is about more than championships. God has a deeper purpose for our sport and our competitive nature that lets us compete for something more. But what is this more?
God’s deeper purpose in all seasons of competition is to glorify Him. So how do we glorify God and compete for something bigger?
Give It to God: Before any practice, game or workout, give it all to God. When you give it to Him, that means you recognize that every success, accomplishment and victory is from Him. Since it comes from His hands, it’s in His hands, and you can give Him all the glory. That is what it looks like to compete with a deeper purpose.
Take Your Eyes Off the Scoreboard: Whether you are playing or coaching, checking the score and time is important and vital; however, it is not the only important thing to look at. God desires for you to glorify Him and love others. When you take your eyes off the scoreboard and begin looking toward those around you, you will begin to see how your teammates could use prayer, support, encouragement, or even Gospel conversations. You can have the highest score, but if you don’t love your teammates well, you will miss the deeper purpose.
Success Isn’t Defined by Wins: Success is more than wins. Times of injury, setbacks and discouragement can be opportunities for you to grow and see God at work in your life and your team. Success is defined not by if you win, but if you grow. Moments of trials and hardships can grow you into a better teammate, athlete, friend and disciple of Christ if you allow them to. Having a mindset where success isn’t defined by a win will allow you to compete freely and purposefully.

“But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared, he saved us —not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy — through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” - Titus 3:4-5
SET
We are taught that hard work pays off in athletics. The more reps you do in the gym, the stronger you become. The stronger you become, the more you increase your ability to perform well. If you keep performing well, you will likely receive more playing time. This chain of events starts and ends with the work you put in. Ultimately, you are in control of your improvement due to the amount you work.
With this mindset, it’s hard to imagine how anything in life wouldn’t be able to be gained through an increase in the amount of good work you put in. That’s why it’s easy to develop a works-based approach to our faith. A works-based approach means that we believe the “better” Christian we are, the more God will love us, thus earning our salvation.
That’s the beauty of our faith. None of us can earn our salvation. All of us are sinful and deserve death (Romans 6:23). Only through the grace and mercy of God do we even have the chance of salvation. Even this chance at salvation doesn’t revolve around our good works but is centered around the belief in the one true work of Christ: His death and resurrection. The only action required to accept this gift of salvation is belief in His wonderful gift.
Good works matter, but don’t let yourself slip into thinking you gained access to heaven through your works. Only through acceptance of Jesus as our Lord do we get to live forever with Him.

“Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord, being double-minded and unstable in all his ways.” -James 1:5-8

You have to believe to achieve. When watching the 2024 Olympic games, we saw some fantastic athletes achieve momentous athletic feats. After winning the men’s 100 meters, American track runner, Noah Lyles, said, “America. I told you, I got this.” Noah had faith in himself and believed that he could win his race. He was not at the starting line doubting his training, motivation and purpose. He approached his race with confidence that what he had done to get to this moment would win him a gold medal.
When we go to God and make a request, are we going with the boldness and faith that God can and will answer us? Or are we seeking out our Father with doubt and fear? James 1 is a clear reminder that if we doubt God’s ability to hear and work in our lives, then we should not expect anything from Him. However, if we approach God with firm faith in who we know God to be, then it is guaranteed we will see Him work in our lives. When we approach God with little faith, we are thrown back and forth like a small boat on the ocean. “Does God hear me?” “Is this an okay thing to ask God?” “Does God even care about this?”.
Do you see how these statements can lead us to lack confidence in God? We are called to have firm faith in the ability of God to hear and answer our prayers. We must remember that throughout Scripture, God is telling us, “My child, I told you, I got this.”
Go
1. What are some of the doubts that race through your head when you go to God in prayer?

“Because of His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” - 1 Peter 1:3
SET
In the mid-1990s, Michael Jordan retired from the NBA to play baseball. Before the end of the 1994 baseball season, when pro baseball went on strike, Jordan started hanging around the Chicago Bulls practice facility and participating in some practices. This fed a firestorm of speculation that Michael was considering returning to the NBA. As he kept practicing with the Bulls, the speculation increased and even turned into a hope that he would return. When he sent his press release “I’m Back” stating an official return to pro basketball, there was almost a collective sigh of relief that he returned.
In his first epistle, Peter tried to encourage displaced Christians by pointing to the hope we have in Christ's resurrection. But it’s not just a hope, is it? It is a living hope. This kind of hope is not just a strong wish that something will happen, like in the Michael Jordan story. Hope in Jesus is a faith that has confidence. We have confidence that God will do what He says because Jesus rose from the dead, as He said He would. Also, it is a living hope. It is alive. It moves and grows. It is not stagnant or still. For the Christian, hope is faith in the Lord that helps us move forward confidently in Him.
As a follower of Christ, you can serve the Lord and live a life filled with the hope supplied by God through His Son Jesus. Thanks to the work of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection, we know that we can trust the Lord and walk in that trust. If Michael Jordan’s NBA return can bring a sigh of relief, think of the excitement when we finally meet our Savior and Lord.

Are you only an athlete or coach when you step onto the field? Does your athletic or coaching ability vanish once you leave the court? Of course not; you have the same ability, regardless of location. Your skills follow you wherever you go because they are a part of who you are.
Once you have the Holy Spirit within you, there is no single place you can go where the Spirit of the Living God will not be with you. In the Psalm above, David is amazed that no matter what he did in his life, the good and the bad, the Spirit never left Him. On days that felt like Heaven, the Spirit was there; on days that represented Hell, the Spirit was present similarly.
In the Old Testament, the Spirit of God came and went and never stayed with someone other than David for their whole life. Not even Moses had the Spirit of God at all times. After Christ died on the cross for our sins, we were given the Spirit at Pentecost. The Spirit now will never leave us. We will have the Spirit of God with us no matter what happens, our location, attitude, or circumstance.
No matter where you are, be comfortable knowing that the Holy Spirit is always be with you if you trust God with your life.

“Act wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.” - Colossians 4:5-6
SET
Being the new kid on the team is not an envied position. Often, you arrive at a system that has been operating without you, and you have to find your way in. The current players are wary because if you are good, one of their positions might be jeopardized. If you have ever been the new kid, you know the feelings of anxiety being an outsider can cause. What makes this anxiety worse is when you are not welcomed with gracious words but shut out with harsh language.
We all know our words matter, especially when speaking to someone new or outside our everyday environment. What we say and how we act towards them leaves a lasting impression, hopefully, a good one. If our words are gracious towards outsiders, we have shown them the type of love God would. If not, we have not set a good example of Godly love.
Our job here on earth is to point people to Christ. Our words and actions either draw people closer or push them farther away. There is no need to become defensive when a new person enters our world because, as followers of Christ, we do not live in scarcity but in abundance. There is enough love, talent and space for God’s people. We do not need to fear because we know abundance in Christ, even if what we have here on earth slips away.
So, if the new kid takes your spot on the team, we are still called to show love and grace towards them. Why? Because our identity isn’t in our sport but in our God.

“There were indeed false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, and will bring swift destruction on themselves.” – 2 Peter 2:1
Set
One of the hardest aspects of being a coach’s kid was to endure people speaking badly about my dad.
I have heard people tell lies, twist the truth, yell and curse at my dad. You name it, I’ve seen it. When I was little, it was hard to understand why these people acted so harshly toward my dad. As I got older, I still didn’t understand it, but I have come to accept that some people will speak falsely and create trouble no matter the situation.
These people exist outside of the world of sports as well. Plenty of people will enjoy spreading lies and false truths about the Gospel. Their goal is to trick us and twist the truth of scripture to fit their narrative.
In the early Christian church, false teachers were a real problem. Since the early Christians were trying to establish and spread the Gospel, false teachings confused people. What made these false prophets so troublesome was that they claimed to be Christians but spread lies and false teachings in the name of Christ. They were internally trying to hurt the name of God by turning people in the wrong direction.
To this day, we still have false prophets around us – people who look and act like Christians but spread false ideas wrapped in Christian language and customs. That’s why holding tight to the Truth in scripture is so important. To be knowledgeable about Christ is not just for our gain but also for our protection. We must listen and trust the Holy Spirit to help us discern what is true or false.
We know what is false if we hold tight to what is true. I knew what was true about my dad and how he coached, which made it impossible to believe the lies.

“Perhaps the LORD will see my affliction and restore goodness to me.” — 2 Samuel 16:12
Set
David experienced some very low times in his life. During one of these times, Absalom, his son, had taken over the capitol city, and David had to run to the hills for his life. During his hasty retreat, David encountered a man named Shimei, who was walking on a hillside. From where he stood, Shimei began to curse David and throw stones and dirt at him. David was flanked on the right and left by loyal members of his administration, and they were getting hit with stones as well.
Apparently Shimei assumed that David’s power was quickly failing and that he could ridicule David without suffering any consequences for his actions. Very few people have the guts to criticize us when we are winning and on the top of our game, but they do not hesitate to kick us when we’re down. The response of David’s guard Abishai was to ask permission to silence Shimei. He wanted to do so by cutting off Shimei’s head. That would certainly stop the criticism, but silencing the critic by cutting his head off is not exactly God’s way of handling the situation. Retaliation is usually our knee-jerk response but not one that God wants from us.
In contrast to Abishai, David responded with patience and discernment. He recognized that somehow his apparent fall from power was a part of God’s sovereign plan and that God would deal with Shimei and others like him.
In order to handle criticism like David did, there are three important principles for us to embrace. First, our identity and security must rest solely and completely in Christ. Second, our faith must be grounded in the sovereignty of God. We must believe that God will handle the situation as he sees best. Third, our desire to do the right thing has to be more important than our feelings. David elected to do what was right rather than succumb to selfish emotions.

"And behold there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said..." – Matthew 28:2-6

I was walking up a hill early on Easter morning, with three of my friends for the annual sunrise service we attend. As the sun rose up in all it's glory, its rays touched my face and warmed my heart, tears flowed as we began to sing what has become my traditional Easter song, That Old Rugged Cross. I have always loved Easter but this year was a little different. I think I finally understand the greatness of God's precious gift to us all. The cross Jesus carried for us was more than just his own daily grind. He was good, faithful, generous, loving and humble, and he took the envy, adultery, evil, rudeness, pride and hate on his shoulders and bled it out in front of the whole world as he hung on that cross all alone. Jesus died so that we might be friends of God once again, His precious children, filled with His love, joy, hope and grace.
I am an athlete and I know the journey of rising in competition, daily strapping on the cross it takes to be the best. You eat, sleep, train, pray and compete trying to keep your mind and heart in the right place as a Christian athlete so you can give it all you've got out there, and be a light for your teammates. But as athletes, this cross is nothing to what Jesus carried, praise God! He made it easy for us. Daily, the cross we have to carry is the one as light as a feather filled with love, hope, joy and grace for ourselves, our teammates, our coaches and every person we run into. Don't be afraid to carry this cross, because it is the greatest honor, the mark of what Christ did and how much he loves us. He died and now "HE HAS RISEN."

Teams are built in a variety of ways. Some are built to run behind a big offensive line with a great running back, while others are built to line up with a mindset where players are skilled to dominate on the defensive side of the ball. Although each team is built to suit different strengths, all teams are built to ultimately accomplish the goal of winning games.
We are individual parts that make up the body of Christ, and we are all built to accomplish different tasks. Some are gifted to serve others, to be a servant leader, to encourage, and to teach. Although we are not all gifted to do the same task by the Holy Spirit, all of these gifts and many more, lead to the same end result: to build up the Church and glorify our Heavenly Father.
Thus, we must each begin by determining how the Holy Spirit has gifted us. From there, as a believer, you must find where God is leading you to use your abilities to further the work of His Church and to glorify His name. So how about you? Pray that God reveals your gifts, and then set out and use them to accomplish the win: that is, glorifying Him!
Go
1. What gifts has the Holy Spirit given you and how can you use this to glorify Him?
2. In Matthew 20:28, Jesus tells the disciples that He “…came not be served but to serve others...” If that is the example Christ set for us to follow, how can we better serve those around us?

“No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.” -Philippians 3:13
Set
Sport enthusiasts often share the great stories of last-minute victories and game-changing plays. But how often does bowling enter that conversation? Bowling doesn’t get much attention, but it taught me a valuable lesson.
In today’s time, technology adds my bowling score on the screen, and calculates my potential high score. As a competitor, I’m now comparing my potential score to the others in my lane. The bowling alley’s computer calculated the most points I could score in every turn. But despite technology’s calculations and my family’s encouragement, I would often fall short of my potential.
Spiritually speaking, my daily goal is to love God and honor Him with my life. God tells me that by the authority of His Spirit, I have incredible power to be victorious! There are times I am victorious, and there are many times where, like bowling, my choices and thoughts go in the gutter. I leave pins standing, and I fail. The Bible calls this sin.
However, as I stand there looking at my misses, my bowling ball returns, I get another attempt! In the same way, God forgives me and lets me have another chance at life with Him in His Kingdom.
With every toss of the ball and with every choice in life, I must intently refocus, forget the past (gutter balls), and look forward to what lies ahead. Even though I will fail at times, God is faithful to forgive. By the authority of His Spirit, we have the potential and incredible power to be victorious!

Michigan FCA desires to fulfill our vision statement by seeing the WORLD transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes ‼️
To further extend God’s impact through FCA, we have laid out five strategies to build FCA’s international ministry and make an impact for Christ outside of the United States:
1) Connecting FCA’s 450 field offices and 1,200 staff members to the world
- Create awareness of FCA’s international ministry within its organization, and help each field office build a focus, strategy and purpose for connecting with a specific area of the world.
2) Train the trainers
- Allow those who would lead sports ministries overseas to come to the United States and “shadow” FCA staff members to learn how FCA’s approach to sports ministry works in America and how they can develop ways to adapt those concepts to match their culture. Also, sending FCA staff members overseas to train groups in sports ministry techniques.
3) Distribute resources
- FCA is known worldwide for its resources, and opening channels to get those resources to the rest of the world is already underway. Spanish, Ukrainian and Mandarin language resources are on shelves, as is the first-ever Chinese sports devotional. FCA’s Heart of an Athlete has been translated into several languages. Translating camp curriculum and inserting it into the back of FCA Bibles in 15 languages assists camp leaders all over the world.
4) Develop an affiliate program
- A long-term goal is to see leaders from across the world building sports ministry in their country. International affiliates of FCA would be able to use FCA resources and tools to grow their ministries.
5) Work in partnership with sports ministry organizations
- The sports ministry movement is made up of organizations and leaders from across the globe that come together to serve the world in sports ministry. “There is a 99 percent chance that a sports ministry leader is already in a location where we want to help,” said Britton. That allows FCA to team up with other leaders to make a greater impact.

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done.” Philippians 4:6
Set
Hours before senior and team captain Tyler Makosy was about to take the mat for his final tournament at the 2020 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, he received a message from his coach that the tournament was canceled. Like so many others, Tyler was heartbroken. In the midst of this current crisis, “heartbroken” seems to be overused and falling short as an adjective to describe this feeling.
Tyler had trained his whole life for this moment. Through many hours, he had finally sucked down his weight for his class; he had practiced his moves relentlessly over countless of hours; he had lifted weights beyond what he had ever thought possible. He gave it his all, but because of COVID-19, his season was over.
The question his closest friends, family, and FCA Huddle teammates were asking was what they could do for Tyler. The question Tyler might have asked himself is what he could do.
The answer: Pray, and pray about anything and everything.
For some, praying might seem trivial during a time where things are getting worse not better. At this time, prayer might seem like offering a thirsty marathon runner half a cup of water at the end of a race. Because Tyler has a deep faith and personal relationship with God, prayer is like a huge glass of cold water to a runner.
As Christians, God calls us to rely on Him and pray to Him when we face personal troubles. Like Tyler, and many coaches and athletes around the world, we have all experienced heartbreak, but we should practice praying for others at this time. It’s by God’s grace that we can experience Him and His comfort and peace for us. We all need to remember to turn our focus on God, and thank Him for all He has done and will do for us.

"Walk as children of light—for the fruit of the light results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth—discerning what is pleasing to the Lord." -Ephesians 5:8-10
Set
If someone walked up to you and asked, “What does it mean to play ‘in the zone’?” how would you respond? What professional athlete comes to your mind when you think about playing in the zone? As an athlete, you have certainly been in the zone at least once. To play in the zone means that you are unstoppable. You are the “go to.” You can’t miss. I think you get the point—when you are in the zone, it is an awesome experience.
What does in the zone mean if you relate it to your spiritual life instead of your sports experience? Have you ever been in the zone spiritually? What does it take to get in the zone? Let’s dig deeper with a few questions based on Ephesians 5:1-10.
- Who in the Bible lived “in the zone”? Why?
- Paul says to be an imitator of God (see v. 1). What does it mean to imitate someone?
- What things does Paul say someone should do to imitate God (see vv. 3-7)?
- When playing in the zone, an athlete is unstoppable. When you are living in the zone for Christ, what does your life look like (see vv. 8-10)?
The 1924 Olympic runner Eric Liddell said, “God made me fast. And when I run, I feel God’s pleasure. To win is to honor Him.” Ask God to show you what it means to play in the zone for Christ. Pray that you will discover more ways to please Him and not please yourself. The FCA Competitor’s Creed states: “I give my all—all of the time.” When you’re giving your all for Christ, you can bet that you’re spiritually in the zone.

In the early 1980s, Eric Davis joined the Cincinnati Reds. He had finally made it to the top, so this was an exciting night. Davis’s debut began on the road in St. Louis, where he grounded out in the fifth inning of his team's 9-1 loss. Worse yet, Davis was forced to wear a numberless jersey because Cincinnati forgot to pack extra road uniforms. They FORGOT?
“I forgot” are two infamous words that plague my life.
“I forgot” to call _______ today like I promised.
“I forgot” to send _______ the email I promised.
“I forgot” his name again.
Forgetfulness is frustrating for everyone. Forgetting God is more than frustrating — it’s dangerous! We often forget God and what He has done for us because we have too many other things occupying our thoughts and our time. So today, STOP and REMEMBER.
- Remember that we are saved by the grace of God, not by our good deeds. (Ephesians 2:8–9)
- Remember to give thanks! When you give thanks to God, the focus is off you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
- Remember that God loves you and has a plan for you! (John 3:16)

“Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength.” – Ephesians 6:10

According to some powerlifting websites, the most weight ever lifted in a squat competition was by Nathan Baptist, who lifted more than 1,300 pounds in 2021. It is simply mind-boggling that a human being lifted well over a half-ton by himself. If anything goes awry, such as improper form or a weight shift while the weight is being lifted or his body can’t hold it, it could lead to a severe injury. It takes such great strength to perform such a feat.
Making it day to day in this world takes strength, too. There is so much that can draw our attention, and it takes the strength offered by Christ to stay on track. Paul wrote about the Armor of God in his letter to the Ephesian church. We must put on the belt, breastplate, sandals, shield, helmet and sword, which is God’s Word. We need every piece to stand firm in this evil time. But, before he gets into all that, Paul said that we need to know in whom our strength is found.
Ephesians 6:10 says to find our strength in the Lord and His strength. If you are a wholehearted follower of Jesus Christ, the power of your Savior is available to help you live as God wants you to. THE God of the universe wants to be the One who gives us strength and security.
Let’s aim to live in the power and might of the Lord. We may not lift a half-ton, but He can lift us to live better for Him. That is strength!

Game day is here. Have I lifted enough? Have I practiced enough? Have I worked hard enough to be ready to compete tonight? These are all questions that run through our minds before we take the field of play. As we sit in the locker room readying for battle, the question we have to answer is, “Am I game ready?”
Men and women in Scripture had to prepare for battle—many times against all odds and opponents. Noah faced jeers and taunting of neighbors and friends, and then the flood. Moses faced leaving the only family he knew to lead the Israelites. Job lost it all—possessions, family, and friends—but continued to follow God. Mary lived a quiet life, was approached by an angel, became pregnant, traveled to Bethlehem, and the rest is history. Many more prepared themselves to be “game ready” when God needed them to respond on game day. God prepares His people to stand firm against everything that comes their way.
Undefeated opponent, ranked first in the conference, toughest team in the county . . . Will we be ready to play? Are we game ready? Coaches see to it that we are ready to take the field in sports, but who equips us for life? Are we ready for the daily battles? Following God and His Word will ready us like the men and women of old. Our worldly opponent is a crafty one, so we must be equipped for battle. Game on!

Every athlete goes through a time when it’s just not happening for them. For a basketball player, it could be that her shot isn’t falling. For a discus thrower, his release is off. For a baseball player, their batting average is suffering. No matter the sport, if played for any length of time, there will be low points or low seasons when things aren’t going smoothly. And it can be in these seasons when we feel isolated and lose sight on the bigger picture. But rest assured, we aren’t the only ones who have experienced a slump in life.
Did you realize that King David, a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14), experienced a low point in His relationship with God. God had empowered David to defeat Goliath, win numerous victories in battle and become the first great human king over Israel. But there were also times when David didn’t feel God’s presence, when it just wasn’t happening for him. Psalms 22 starts, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” It’s the same heart cry of Jesus as He hung on the cross. Even David, the chosen one of God, was feeling isolated and far from God.
As Christians, we all go through it at some point. A prayer seems to go nowhere, or our quiet times feel dry and fruitless. Our spirit just seems off, and we feel alone. But if we keep reading Psalms 22, we see that David remembers God is always there and will deliver him, regardless of his current circumstances. This same promise is true for us. As Deuteronomy 31 states, God has promised to never leave us or forsake us.
As athletes, we will continue to train to push through our physical slumps. As Christians, we are encouraged by turning to the Scriptures, being reminded that God will never abandon us. Low seasons come and go, but His promises last forever.

Michigan FCA “CTO” Marriage Retreat 2025🙌
Recap from FCA Staff⬇️
“Overall, the weekend was an amazing experience for coaches and their spouses to reinvest relationally, rest meaningfully, and renew spiritually. There were a total of 30 couples gathered together for a time of fun, fellowship, and learning how couples can be intentional to keep God at the center of their marriage. Special thanks to Rob and Karen Shive for taking the time to lead interactive workshops that shared great information, Biblical truth, along with practical steps couples can take to grow closer to the Lord and their spouse.
The main verse used for the weekend was Matthew 7:24-25: “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock.”
Praise God for an incredible weekend! Couples are headed home with a passion for one another and a mission to model Christ’s love as they impact lives through the world of sports!”
Thank you Jesus!!

“‘What you’re doing is not good,’ Moses’s father-in-law said to him.” – Exodus 18:17

In the documentary “The Redeem Team,” about the 2008 Gold medal-winning USA Men’s Olympic basketball team, a domino effect occurred.
Almost the entire team had gone out to party after practice until nearly dawn. When they returned to their rooms, they met the late Kobe Bryant on his way to work out. Instead of going out to party, he had gone to his room and rested for an early start the next day. Bryant’s teammates thought he was crazy, but by the end of that week, the entire team followed his example.
Everyone has influence. We may not be a Kobe, LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony, but how we live and play sports can be an example to others. When Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, visited the Israelite camp after they left Egypt, he got a first-hand view of how things were run. Jethro saw Moses judging and settling disputes from sunup to sundown. Jethro was concerned and encouraged Moses to reorganize and put trusted men over smaller groups to handle minor disputes, and then the larger issues would come to Moses and the Lord.
When Jethro saw that Moses would wear himself out doing things the old way, he used their relationship to guide him to a better plan. That is influence.
Matthew 12:34 says, “For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.” What is in us, who we truly are, is revealed in our words, attitude and behavior – and they impact others.
Use your influence to help others and point to Jesus wherever possible.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” - Matthew 6:33

I remember being a collegiate athlete and not understanding the fullness of rest. Rest only came when I felt under the weather or if injury occurred. Spending time with God was a mere “on the fly” kind of deal. I would participate in a Bible study once a week and counted that toward my faith hours. That’s how I thought until I met my spiritual mentor, who showed me how to create time for God. A big portion of that lesson was that I had to make the choice to make room for God. My schedule doesn’t come first; God does. And it changed everything for me.
As coaches and athletes, schedules are jam packed. You have routines filled with practice plans, competitions scheduled, travels booked, and lifting sessions. Additionally, you deal with extracurricular team participation activities and dinners, school and studying, and personal things, among others.
Jesus also was remarkably busy. He was on the move, walking miles and miles to the next town. People stopped and interrupted Jesus all the time. He taught in and out of villages and sat with many for meals. He healed His people and moved through tumultuous crowds. His days were filled teaching His apostles and rebuking those who doubted Him. Despite His wildly busy schedule, Jesus would find a solitary place and pray early in the morning (Mark 1:35). He was notorious for withdrawing from the crowd and His people to go spend time with His Father. People would go looking for Jesus beyond the crowd and find Him in prayer, spending time with God (Luke 4:42).
We are also called to spend time with the Father. We must make room and space in our schedule because it will always be worth it. Maybe it’s a few extra minutes before the day begins, or it’s an intentional lunch outside away from everybody else to seek Him. We may have to exchange one small task in exchange for time with God.
Amidst the busy schedules, Jesus found time to be with the Father, and so should we.
